Investing in Women: Accelerating Progress through Cooperation

Euro Coop celebrates International Women's Day 2024, emphasizing the co-operative movement's commitment to empowering women through co-operative principles. By providing economic opportunities, skill development, and leadership roles, co-operatives highlight the importance of investing in women to accelerate progress towards equality and empowerment.
As the world celebrates International Women's Day on March 8, 2024, the United Nations calls upon nations and communities to unite under the theme "Invest in women: Accelerate progress." At Euro Coop, we echo this call to action and emphasize the crucial role that cooperation plays in empowering women and driving positive change in society.
In today's world, we face several challenges, from geopolitical tensions to environmental crises and economic disparities. Yet, amidst these challenges, investing in women emerges as a powerful solution to accelerate progress towards a more equitable, sustainable future. The United Nations warns that without concerted action, millions of women and girls could be pushed into extreme poverty by 2030. To address this crisis, governments must prioritize gender-responsive financing and increase investments in essential services and social protection programs.
We recognize that women's empowerment is not only a matter of social justice but also an economic imperative. Women's contributions to economies worldwide, both through paid employment and unpaid care work, are invaluable. However, women continue to bear a disproportionate burden of unpaid care responsibilities, spending three times more time on such tasks than men.
Co-operatives play a crucial role in valuing and recognizing women's contributions to economies and communities. We firmly uphold the co-operative principles of voluntary and open membership, democratic control, and concern for the community. These principles form the foundation for creating spaces where women can actively participate, lead, and shape decision-making processes that impact their lives and communities.
Co-operatives provide platforms for economic participation, skill development, and leadership opportunities, empowering women to unlock their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society. By accessing resources, markets, and networks through co-operative enterprises, women can thrive economically while addressing social needs and priorities.
Promoting equality is fundamental to co-operatives. By working together in solidarity, women can overcome historical barriers, challenge inequalities, and create pathways to economic and social empowerment. Through co-operative enterprises, women have the opportunity to access resources, markets, and networks previously inaccessible to them.
Additionally, co-operatives embody the principles of solidarity and mutual support, fostering environments where women can network, collaborate, and advocate for gender-responsive policies and practices. By amplifying women's voices and experiences, co-operatives ensure that women's needs and priorities are central to decision-making processes at all levels.
As we honor International Women's Day, let us recognize and celebrate the transformative contributions of women to the co-operative movement and their role in building a more just, inclusive, and sustainable world for all. Together, through cooperation and collective action, we can create a future where every woman has the opportunity to thrive, and where the principles of equality, empowerment, and solidarity are celebrated.
Happy International Women's Day from Euro Coop!
