EU Overshoot Day - Euro Coop urges EU leaders to tackle the nature, climate and pollution crises
03.05.2024 10:24:50

Today marks the EU’s overshoot day, signifying that if global consumption mirrored EU patterns, Earth's resources would be depleted by May 3rd.
As Euro Coop, among 317 civil society organizations, we urge EU leaders to commit to a climate-neutral, zero-pollution, and nature-positive economy.
Our demands are clear:
Accelerate the Green Deal, implementing agreed goals and addressing nature, climate, and pollution gaps.
Increase public investments in climate, environment, and social sectors.
Strengthen EU governance, democracy, and civil society participation.
With just 7% of the global population, the EU's consumption demands three planets, an unsustainable and irresponsible burden. Ecological overshoot consequences include deforestation, biodiversity loss, water scarcity, and climate change, disproportionately impacting Europe.
As EU elections approach, decision-makers hold the power to shift priorities. By prioritizing climate action, biodiversity preservation, and pollution reduction, the EU can lead in ensuring our planet's survival. Euro Coop stands united with civil society in this urgent call for change.
