Euro Coop Co-Signs Op-Ed on GMO Labelling: Defending Consumers’ Right to Know

Euro Coop has co-signed an opinion piece published in The Brussels Times entitled “Modified food, modified rights? Why GMO labelling must stay”. The article calls on EU policymakers to uphold consumers’ right to know what is in their food by maintaining mandatory labelling and traceability for all genetically modified organisms (GMOs), including those produced through new genomic techniques (NGTs).

The co-signatories, representing consumer and civil society organisations across Europe, express concern that the European Commission’s proposed framework for NGTs could exempt such products from safety assessments, traceability, and labelling. This would mark a significant step backward for transparency and consumer protection in the EU.

As the piece highlights, “transparency is not optional — it is a consumer’s right”, Euro Coop firmly believes that innovation in food production must go hand in hand with public trust and accountability. Labelling and traceability ensure that consumers can make informed choices based on their values and preferences.

Euro Coop remains committed to defending consumer rights and promoting a fair, transparent, and sustainable food system across Europe.
