World Food Day 2025: Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future — Consumer Coops Leading by Example

Each year, World Food Day reminds us that achieving food security, healthy diets, and sustainable food systems is a shared responsibility. The FAO’s 2025 theme — “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future” — calls on all actors to collaborate in transforming how food is produced, distributed, and consumed.
This message resonates strongly in the International Year of Cooperatives, celebrated under the UN slogan “Cooperatives Build a Better World.” Both initiatives share a common vision: that meaningful progress happens when people work together towards shared goals of fairness, sustainability, and resilience.
Across Europe, consumer cooperatives embody this principle every day. Guided by values of democracy, solidarity, and social responsibility, they bring together consumers and producers to make better food choices accessible to all. Their private label products are a tangible expression of these values — combining quality, affordability, and sustainability in ways that put people and the planet first.
Private Labels for People and the Planet
For consumer cooperatives, private labels are not just brands; they are commitments to transparency, innovation, and care. These products are developed with rigorous standards for food safety, environmental performance, and ethical sourcing. Many prioritise local suppliers, circular packaging, and healthier ingredients, making it easier for consumers to choose responsibly every day.
This cooperative approach continues to earn recognition across Europe. At the 2025 European Private Label Awards, several Euro Coop members were honoured for their innovation and sustainability — clear proof that cooperative brands can lead the market while staying true to their values.
Affordable Quality, Collective Progress
In a time of persistent food inflation and growing social inequality, cooperatives play a crucial role in ensuring affordable access to nutritious food. Their private label strategies aim to deliver fair prices without compromising quality or ethics. Because cooperatives reinvest profits in their members and communities, every purchase helps build a more inclusive and resilient food system.
Through these products, consumer cooperatives demonstrate that sustainability and affordability can go hand in hand — when driven by cooperation rather than competition.
Building a Better Food Future Together
The FAO’s call to work hand in hand for better foods and a better future resonates deeply with the cooperative movement. Consumer cooperatives show how collaboration between citizens, producers, and retailers can reshape our food systems — fostering trust, empowerment, and sustainability.
On this World Food Day 2025, Euro Coop celebrates the everyday impact of consumer cooperatives across Europe. As part of the International Year of Cooperatives, their collective efforts under the banner “Consumer Cooperatives: Building a Better World” illustrate how working hand in hand truly creates better foods for all.
