Coop Estonia to Acquire Prisma Stores and Strengthen Cooperation with SOK

Our member Coop Estonia has signed an agreement with the Finnish retail group SOK for the acquisition of Prisma Peremarket and its 13 stores in Estonia, while also laying the groundwork for closer strategic cooperation between the two cooperative retailers.
The transaction, which is subject to approval by the Estonian Competition Authority, is expected to be finalised in the course of 2026, with both chains continuing to operate separately until then. Although financial details have not been disclosed, the deal represents the largest domestic retail transaction in Estonia’s history.
The acquisition will allow Coop Estonia to combine its strong nationwide presence with Prisma’s distinctive and diverse assortment, including products popular across Scandinavia, making them accessible to a wider share of Estonian consumers. At the same time, Coop Estonia plans to expand the availability of Estonian-made products in Prisma stores, further supporting local producers. Beyond the acquisition, the agreement also foresees broader cooperation between Coop Estonia and SOK, reflecting their shared cooperative background and values, and opening opportunities to enhance product offerings in Estonia while supporting the entry of Estonian goods into Scandinavian markets.
The transaction will notably strengthen Coop Estonia’s footprint in Tallinn, where its market share has traditionally been more limited. Even after the acquisition, it is expected to remain just above 15%, still below the group’s national average of over 23%. Once completed, the acquired stores will be operated by Coop Estonia’s regional consumer cooperatives reflecting the group’s cooperative structure. For consumers, the transition is expected to ensure continuity, with Prisma customers retaining access to their favourite products while also benefiting from a broader range of local goods.
With around 320 stores and nearly 6,000 employees, Coop Estonia is the country’s leading food and everyday goods retailer, present in both urban and rural areas, often serving as the only retail provider in smaller communities. This development also highlights the importance of strengthening cooperation and building networks among consumer cooperatives across Europe. By working more closely together, cooperatives can leverage their shared values, expand their reach, and create new opportunities for both consumers and producers, reinforcing the cooperative model as a driver of sustainable and inclusive growth.
